The development of the locomotive G1206 arose from the requirement of the RAG Company in the middle of the 90's for a locomotive for heavy shunting and distance service. The Locomotive needed to have a strong motorisation and to meet requirements of the German Railways network. MTU and Caterpillar engines provided power of 1500 kW, which enabled the locomotive's to developed maximum speed of 100 km/h. The G1206 were constructed by Mak (later by Vossloh Kiel).
