The Vossloh G1700 is a development of the Vossloh G1206. As the name suggests it was supposed to be equipped with an engine that should have provided 1,700 kW of power, however, it was equipped with an MTU engine with 1,500 kW. Additional changes to the G1206 were also carried out and the whole length of the G1700 loco increased. Locomotives produced later were supplied with a Caterpillar engine, which provided the originally required 1,700 kW. However, in 2003 more G1700 were supplied with the MTU engine. This offered customers the choice between the MTU and the Caterpillar engine.
