Conforming to the requirements of the SNCB/NMBS, the class 77 is designed as a 4 axled locomotive with 2 bogies, which is suitable for the heavy shunter services, as well as all kind of freight trains on the mainlines. The class 77 engines has the power of 1150 kW, a speed of 60 km/h in shunting, and 100 km/h in freight train service. They are constructed by Siemens/Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik (VSFT) in Kiel, and are developed to be used in multiple units of 2 until 3 locos, commanded from one cab. The delivery of the 170 units of class 77 ordered by the SNCB/NMBS started in 1999 and will go on until 2005. 20 units (7770-7790) are equipped with Dutch and German signalisation system, and a number of class 77 has radio guidance.
