The locomotive 252 is a derivate from the German E-120. Thanks to the particular characteristics of the three-phase asynchron motors, it can haul passenger trains with 220 km/h as well as freight trains with 100 km/h. The possibility to control each of the four driving motors independently, combined with the three-phase traction, gives to this type an extraordinary pulling force in all drive conditions. The notable distance 3.000 mm between the axles is necessary for a stable high speed service. The regular use of the locomotive started in year 1992. The prototype 127-001, denominated Eurosprinter, is based on Spanish 252 with some improvements like increased max. speed of 230 km/h, improved motor suspensions, different cooling liquid for the electronics and adaption to the German catenary voltage. Together with the Portuguese CP 5600 more than 100 locomotives were built.
