Description
8.8mm – 10.2mm AC Traction Tires (10 pcs)
Traction tires for AC locomotives.
For wheels with diameter 8.8–10.2 mm.
Content: 10 pieces/package.
The actual tires’ diameter is much smaller than the specifications but will stretch to the desired size once installed.
The tires are shipped “as a flat tire”, looking like washer, but will conform to the wheel shape when installed, obviously.
The only difference between DC and AC traction tires is the “thickness”, so technically you could also use DC traction tires for AC locomotives and vice versa.
The thickness is different, because the wheel flanges of the AC locomotives are higher and thus the rubber material of the traction tires can get in further.
This means that if you use an AC traction tire on a DC locomotive with standard wheel flanges, the locomotive will tend to run a bit unstable because the rubber is too thick. Conversely, DC traction tires for AC locomotives will have too little rubber, i.e. traction will not really improve.
Now the special case, for complete confusion: There are model railroaders who also mount the wheelsets with high wheel flanges on DC locomotives because there are sometimes problems with the points with the low standard wheel flanges. If this should be the case, then you can mount the AC traction tires on a DC locomotive without any problems.
